We are collaborating with CBOs, domestic and international medical institutions, and government officials to build a supportive network for Oregon House Bill 3511 (HB3511), which would mandate betel nut awareness and education for health professionals in Oregon.
HB3511 seeks to require the Oregon Health Authority to develop and implement culturally sensitive education and awareness programs in collaboration with NGOs and similar organizations in communities disproportionately affected. This includes mandating the inclusion of betel nut health information in healthcare and dental provider training and educational curricula. By collaborating with policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals, we intend to raise general public awareness about its harmful effects.
Additionally, the bill directs the Oregon Department of Education and Higher Education Coordinating Commission to implement betel nut training in curricula and requires the Oregon Medical Board and Oregon State Board of Nursing to ensure healthcare providers are knowledgeable about betel nuts’ health effects.
The bill allocates funding for these efforts and declares an emergency to ensure immediate action.
